August Bulletin Boards

In keeping with our Hawaiian Theme of the Month, print one of the borders below. Print as many sheets as you need (on 8 1/2" x 11" paper). Cut out and assemble your border along the top and bottom of your board.

In addition:

  1. Cover the bulletin board with one of the colors in the border.
  2. Drape a garland of flowers across the top of the board and/or attach leis at the corners of the board.
  3. Write your theme of the month on banner paper and put it in the center of your board.
  4. See our Theme of the Month page for special signs to go along with the theme. Use them to advertise all of your theme-related activities this month.
  5. Use the special theme calendar on the Creating Calendars page to complete the theme look.
  6. Write the names of people with August birthdays on a large cutout of a pineapple.
  7. Add other theme-related cutouts. See our Clip Art page for some possibilities.
  8. Post a "Hawaiian Word of the Day" on the board. (Type an English word into this translator and it will give you the Hawaiian word.)
  9. Save a corner of the board for some Hawaii Facts and Trivia.
  10. Post pictures and posters of Hawaii. See Front Porch Travels for some possibilities.

Other Border Options

If you prefer, use one of the borders below. If you select the seashells or sand dollars border, use a "watery" or "sandy" colored background fabric and drape a fishing net across the top of the board. For the watermelon border, use a bright pink or green background and add an artificial vine across the top of the board.

Centerpieces - "Pineapple Hula Girl"

Perfect for a luau or anytime you want something a little whimsical for your table.

You will need:

  • A pineapple
  • Raffia string
  • One 2-inch styrofoam ball
  • Brown acrylic paint and paint supplies
  • Silk flowers
  • Ribbon (long enough to tie around the pineapple and make a bow)
  • Glue and scissors
Print a large PICTURE of the finished centerpiece to get a closer look.

To make it:

  1. Tie a long piece of raffia around the “waist” of the pineapple. Make a knot and cut off the extra.

  2. For the grass skirt, take 10-inch lengths of raffia, fold them over the "belt," and adjust so the ends are the same length. Do several pieces at a time. Repeat around the pineapple until the skirt is full. Trim if necessary.

  3. Take a piece of ribbon and tie it around the pineapple between the "belt" and the green "hair."

  4. Cut a styrofoam ball in half and paint both halves brown.

  5. When the paint has dried, glue the halves onto the ribbon to complete the "coconut bikini top."

  6. Glue a silk flower at the base of the green “hair.”

  7. Add a lei or other Hawaiian decorations.

Variation:

Instead of the styrofoam ball, use two seashells.

  • Jar of macadamia nuts
  • Pineapple
  • Basket of other fruits
  • Leis
  • Hawaiian shirt
  • Grass skirt
  • A ukulele
  • Some seashells
  • An orchid plant
  • Books and posters about Hawaii
  • Some gold accents
