Has anyone started doing practice sessions with the residents on the interview process for the MDS 3.0? If so, what are your thoughts? I thought I would start at the very beginning and ask one of our cognitively intact residents the questions just to see how far I could go, as state is saying anyone can ask questions of the residents. It took me 45 minites and I didn't even get section B completed. I think this is going to be a long process until we get the hang of it. What are you thoughts? |

I couldn't agree more. We are in the middle of a 9-part training right now and it is obvious I will have to find a way to give my staff alot more time to complete the MDS. We have not done a test run yet, we are still discussing which departments will be completing which sections. I think the overall concept of getting the resident much more involved in the MDS completion is a great idea but I feel there are some unrealistic expectations. I feel the MDS 3.0 will be much more useful to our staff now d/t information such as the BIMS and the PHQ-9, which allow you to compare and see how the resident improved or declined from one assessment to the next. Also the only interview sections are C (BIMS), D (Mood), F (Activity/prefrences) J (Pain/Falls) and Q (Goals and Discharge). I would think in most cases Social Services would be completing most of those. |

My facility was chosen as one of our 6 company-wide to complete practice interviews and of course, I as the AD, am only in charge of Section F. So far, I've completed 12 interviews and of those 12, I've had only 4 residents that were able to understand what I was asking and answer logically. My MDS nurse says that based on 3.0 that 85% of residents should be interviewable...HAHA! NOOOT! I've spend at least 15 minutes on each of the other uninterviewable residents researching, calling and figuring out what their answers should be. I do however think that completing these right now and getting a feel for it has definitely helped me get into the swing of it and I do think that I'm going to like it better than previous section N. |
