Looking to stock my activity carts with activity supplies for 1:1 visits for residents w/ dementia.

Anyone have any good ideas as to what works well and / or what you have stocked on your carts?

I actually have themes set up - ocean theme is packed with seashells, starfish, pics of family on the beach, lighthouse pictures, ocean music CD. Fishing tackle box has lures, etc. I have that talking/singing fish :),Wedding has photos, bouquet, funny cake topper, love song CD., boutenierre. I also spray fake flowers with smelly stuff and keep them in a sealed bag and will do a flower arrangement with them. I have a military box that I filled with photos, and found some old medals, etc. I even have a jewelry box and a beautiful hat and I always keep a camera on my cart and if family is there - I offer to take pictures because I know those last pictures mean a lot! My photo albums of babies and animals are also a fun thing. Movie stars photo album. School days kit - class photos, supplies, pics of old one room schools, paste that everyone used to eat - ha and scented markers! You get the picture! I also keep some nail stuff on my cart, just in case they have some badly chipped polish on. This site has great ideas for one on one stuff -Making Sense - One on One! I don't do balloons at all because so many caregivers and people seem to react to latex these days. Most of my photo albums are set up scrapbook style - I just color copy friends and families scrapbooks!

Nasco has some wonderful 1:1 kits such as: "Toys of our Childhood", "Transportation", "1:1 Games", "Sensory Kits"; etc. If budget is an issue, you can go to their website which lists what each kit contains and perhaps pick up items from your local 99 cent store.

We have 2 rather large activity carts and we have the usual items to put on it. However, I purchased 2  Q-cords or omni harps. None of us know how to play music but this is very simple. It has a place to insert specially made tapes that go with the Q-cord. We insert it, and instruct the residents to just strum. They really enjoy this! It is a great tool to use as a 1:1 and it is great for small group activities too. One of the songs on the tapes is "You are my sunshine" and that is a resident favorite! This activity has been very good for our dementia residents. It was a good investment for us. I think I bought them from Amazon.com
