i know that it's getting close and was wondering what themes everyone is using for National Nursing home Week this year? we start the week with Mother's Day and the crowning of the blessed Mary. We do a dance and have some fun programs throughout the week. any ideas on visiting animal programs in New Hampshire that may have worked at your facility?

Since the national theme is "Celebrate the Journey" we're doing a cruise ship! The theme days are:

Carribean Cruise

African Safari Cruise

Mexican Rivera Cruise

Alaskan Cruise

and European !

we actually began writing autobiographies in our writing club and are picking a special part of our life journey and sharing our story with other residents, family members and staff.  whoever participates gets their name put in a drawing and a gift bag will be given to a female resident, male resident, and a staff member.  we also will be celebrating our life journey through music in which we will have a karaoke day and will be singing music from the 50's 60's and 70's.  Lastly we will be watching oscar winning movies each day throughout the decades.  other days of the week will include a silly hat day, a wii bowling tournament.  I am always excited about NNHW but exhausted afterwards lol.  hope everyone else has a blast!

We are doing Oscar winning films. I'm a total movie buff so I'm excited. I'm trying to crank out an outline for each day ASAP. I'll list the movies. I would love some ideas!!

  • Titanic
  • West Side Story
  • Forrest Gump
  • The Sound of Music
  • Rocky
  • Casablanca

Hi Laurie,

Granite State Zoo (AKA Wildlife Encounters) has been to our facility a dozen times or more and we absolutely love them. They have many different animal "encounters" to choose from, and they are extremely interesting, interactive and informative. By far the best.

We have also hosted 2 others severals times and both are now resident favorites. The first is New England K-9 Search and Rescue. They will come and do a slide presentation explaining the training process for the dogs, talk about actual rescues, and bring dogs for demonstrations.

Lastly, I would highly reccomend NH School of Falconry. They also come with lots of info and birds of prey that do outstanding demonstrations

Does anyone know inexpensive but memorible themes for National Nursing Home WeeK.

We have thought of everyday has it's own theme:

- Farmers' Day-have farmer come to talk about his farm bringing memeories of farmlife for res.

-Hat Day-wear fun and interesting hats-Implement some kind of food or snack

-Hawaiian Day- wear lays- some snack with pineapple.

-Ice cream sundaes-50's music this day, car show possible.

_5th day BBQ througout campus and Super Bingo games prizes.

Does anyone have any suggestions to add to this? Please, if you do I invite them.

Thanks,

Tina- The Cedars, in McPherson, KS

Our facility was not thrilled with the offician NNHW theme but loved the one for Older Americans month this year. This year their theme is "never too old to play". As Older Americans month is also celebrated in May, we opted to use their theme for our NNHW celebrations.

Each day of our week has fun events for both staff and residents.

Monday: Mismatch day - we are giving away free popcorn to our staff during our video and popcorn activity.

Tuesday: Crazy hat day - we are doing an event called "never too old for makeovers" where a staff member and resident pair up. The resident is given a set time limited in which to give their staff teammate a makeover.... the catch is that the resident doing the makeup is blindfolded. :)

Wednesday: Old fasion dress day - staff and residents are encouraged to dress in their idea of "old time fashions". We will then have a fashion show to show off the fabulous outfits.

Thursday: Disco day - our big event for this day is the human horse race game. We adapted the table top horse race game for larger than life fun. We block out the horse race grid on the ground in tape. Instead of horse pieces, the staff/residents who want to play get to be the horses. It's always a hit with our residents.

Friday: Casual dress day - Every year we end our nursing home week celebration with an ice cream sundae social for our staff and residents.
