Does anyone have any tips they are willing to share about starting such a program? I honestly don't know where to begin. Lesta |

I am starting just such a program myself. We are teaming up with high school kids grades 9 - 11. But I think it can work with any age. Now this is all in theory mind you because we have yet to start but i am feeling very positive that it will work. To start we are going to do a group activity with the kids and residents. This will involve group games or maybe crafts. This gives the kids an opportunity to meet the residents without forcing them to entertain someone for half an hour. Then after one or two group events we will be able to pair the residents and kids up and let them spend time one to one. I will be providing info packages to the kids with ideas of different activities to do with the residents so that they don't just have to come up with something on the spot, especially since they will be coming in on weekends when I am not working. Just yesterday we had a class in to help us decorate pumpkins with our dementia residents. It was so neat to see some of the kids connect right away to a resident. But it was also a perfect no pressure way for the kids to spend time with the residents also. If you are thinking of having younger kids come you could do a craft group or play games, like beanbag toss. As for getting kids, I simply emailed the schools asking if they would be interested in doing a program like this. Hope this helps. |

Our adult day care program has had this program for 18 years....It is really neat...We partner up with a local elementary school and have a class of 3rd graders visit us monthly from September until May... They arrive at 10 am and leave at 11:30am...The residents in the nursing home join us as well.... This year we have a class of 27 and we pair up 1 to 1 (or we try)...It is a commitment on the part of the resident/client... We are meeting next week for a halloween party...They come in costume and we give them treat bags... We are playing "ghost" bingo... The teacher does an orientation with the students to give them the feel of being the "grandma or Grandpa" popcorn in the shoes...vaseline on the glasses... I hope you try it...it is worth the planning and all the rest.... |

Memorybridge is a wonderful program based out of Chicago that has a fantastic ready made curriculum for a middle school teacher and activity director to partner with common goals. Highly endorsed by Naomi Feils. Great turn-key program you can do anywhere, great for LTC and memory impaired folks! Check out video description at www.memorybridge.org |
