Does anyone have an activity in-service for CNA's that you would share? I'd appreciate it!

Thank you, Dorothy

There's one I like to do with new hires while they're doing orientation, but it can be done at anytime.

Ask them to list the 5 things in life that are most important to them, most say

family, religion, health, freedom, job, home

then I ask them to imagine our residents; poor health, no home (they now have a 10'x12' home), family gone, can't work anymore, can't drive, etc. Ask them to tell me how being a resident in ltc changes all of that.

I try to get them to empathise, then I talk about the environment, blinds open, tv or radio on, stimulation.

Then I ask them what thier daily routine is; bathing, dressing, eating, talking, read the paper...and get them to realize that ADL's are also activities....ANYTHING can be an engaging activity if they take the time to engage the resident during ADL's. And then go over the importance of assisting residents to activities. (lllloooolll). Some do it, some won't...but it's worth a try.

Thank you for sharing, I will include some of what you suggested. I should have mentioned that while we do have ltc, 45% are short stay, just here for a few weeks receiving PT or other treatment, so some of the needs are different.

Also, last night I ordered an in-service from Re-Creative Resources called "Breaking Down the Silos", it appears to be very complete with a handout book and even power point presentation if you want to be more formal.

I gave everyone a piece of paper and had them rip it into four equal pieces and in each square draw something that meant a lot to them. When everyone was done some explained why it was important to them. At the end they ripped all the squares apart. It seemed to get to them. Another one we did is put each person in a wheelchair for about 2 hours and made them try to get around in them. After they were done trying to reach for stuff and asking for help they were more open to our residents who can't do for themselves!
