Hi All, Have you ever stpped to think about the freedom you have? On May 29th at 3:00 pm please remember to pause for a moment of silence to pay homage to those who have died to make freedom possible. Please pass the word that on memorial day at 3PM local time, all Americans around the world should stop & remember the price so many have paid. I will be announcing this overhead & hope you will all join me in this national recognition of these heroes who paid the ultimate price for us to be free!!! thanks!!!! |

I've always been curious about Memorial Day and Veterans Day in the States. I recently learned the difference between the 2 days but how is each recognized? Are they stat holidays? Are there usually services that people go to, etc? In Canada we have Remembrance Day on November 11 each year - it's a day to honour and remember anyone involved in any wars (though the focus is usually WWI and WWII) - whether they died in battle, died later in life, or are still living. It's a stat holiday and most places have a service around 11am. The Royal Canadian Legion runs the service and do things like laying wreaths, roll call, 2 minutes of silence, etc. It's a powerful service and I think it's so important to honour the men and women who are responsible for our freedom. |

Memorial Day is for those who have passed, beginning with military but went on to include non-military-family gravesite visits, etc. Veterans Day Nov 11 is for recognizing and honoring living military, and may include remembering those military who passed as well, when the stories start coming. |

Memorial day was established to honor those who have served & paid the ultimate price for the freedom we cherish. Known also as decoration day, families & loved ones of those lost visit cemetaries around the country to "decorate" or lay flowers at solders graves. It is celebtrated in recent times w/ parades including all branches of the military & picnics & family get togethers. It marks the begining of summer w/ pools opening & summer events beginning.
Labor day, on the other hand, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social & economic achievements of the american worker. It is a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well being of our country. It is the working mans holiday. Brought about by the trade & labor unions. It allows for many american workers the day off, as it falls on a monday, to attend parades, get togethers w/ family, picnics etc. It represents to most the end of summer, w/ pools closing & an end to summer fun. |
