I was just wondering if anyone would like to share if you have a policy on families bringing in pets to visit your residents.  We are going to implement one and was just wondering if anyone had suggestions other then the normal ones we all think of.  Such as: always on a leash, up to date on shots, non-violant, etc.  Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

I haven't actually written a policy yet, but plan on it. But we do have some unwritten rules....I have a copy of their updated vet records and the pet must be on a leash at all times. In order to avoid the same family member being asked 100 times if we have the records we have instituted a cute little thing. A volunteer made us several "kerchiefs" with velcro in a variety of sizes. They are kept at the front desk and when the family/pet comes in they stop there to borrow one for their visit. It's a visible signal to the staff that the pet has been "approved." We are a brand new facility so we constantly have new residents whose families bring in their pets. We also are constantly having new staff members start work who don't know the pets yet. The kerchiefs help make things go alot smoother.

We have a policy for pets that lists the same items you have such as vet records, on a leash no longer than 6 feet and under the owners control at all times along with other items.

This is what our policy states:

All Visitors wishing to bring their pets into the facility must:

1: Provide a copy of the pets current veterinarian immunizations to the Recreation Therapist, to be kept on file in the Activities Department.

2: Your pet must be kept on a leash no longer than 6' at all times, and under your control.

3: Pets are not allowed in dining areas during meal times, nor in other areas where food is prepared or stored, dishwashing or dish storage areas, medication areas, clean or sterile supply areas or any other areas where sanitary precautions are necessary to protect the health, comfort, safety and well-being of the residents.

The reason we list areas such as medication areas etc. is that this covers all visitors including staff not just family members.  It is too easy for a staff member to bring in their pet, stop by the nurses station to chat and while the nurse is getting supplies out of the med room, the staff visitor may be standing outside the med room chatting while the dog (on the 6' foot leash) steps into the room.  This policy lays the ground rules so to speak.

Hope this helps!

We actually have pets the live in the home! Several of our residents have brought their pets from home(dogs and cats). We have one dog that is the homes dog! Stella! She is a great blessing. She has been here for a few years and loves giving our elders attention! We actually use her in activites! We make dog biscuits and sew bandanas for her to wear! I encourage a pet in every home!!!
