Doing a men's group is very difficult!  I just started one and am having a HUGE problem getting the men to come!  The guys I feel need to attend don't want to.  Those that do attend are those that have physical limitations and are assisted to the group by staff and can not leave by their own free will (unable to propel own w/c).  These residents also attend my regular activity program so I am not as concerned about their socialization or possible isolation.  Others that refuse are those that would rather attend the regular activity program so they can "be with the ladies"!

I am calling my group "Men's This & That Club".  I have done this for a couple reasons.  The guys have to come to the "Club" to see what we are going to do, and my staff can be flexible as to what they do depending on what the guys feel like doing so we are not trapped into one set activity; having the guys leave not wanting to play cards; rather wanting to watch a movie (for example).

Some of the things we have started with on this program (and hope to get better ideas as we go along) are: card games, checkers, dominoes, magazines (reminiscing), woodworking crafts, TV shows (fishing, monster trucks, the history channel - ice bridge haulers etc.) with snacks, target shooting (using a kids suction cup gun and I draw a target on our large window with a wet erase marker for easy removal), old comdey DVD's (Andy Griffith, Red Skelton, etc) with snacks, I also found 2 activities that I am going to try 1) Off to the Races (a race horse dice game) and Cow chip Throwing Contest (using chocolate chip cookies).

As I said, the men are a tough group to target so I hope these ideas help and if you have any other ideas; please post them because I too could use the help!
