Hi, I'm new to an Activity Director position in a small nursing home. If any of you have advice or suggestions that you think would be helpful, please let me know. |

Hi, We too have a small group of residents (38) We have excellent results from using memorystreets question and answer books for seniors, it really breaks the ice and has a variety of subjects for all cognitive levels. All the work is done for you or you can use them as reference when playing games like hangman. Request free sample pages at my e mail address and I will send them to you to try out with your seniors. kimandjim9@comcast.net |

Anytime! I also purchased a sensory game called "Find It" from Target, in the toy dept. it is a clear tube filled with little beads and among the beads there are items that you have to find by turning/shaking the tube...it will keep anyone entertained for hours. Check it out. |

Whenever I've started a new position in senior living, I always have a series of teas (I only invite 6-10 residents depending on the size of the population), to get to know the residents a little at a time. Then you can sit with them in a less formal atmosphere and get to know their likes and dislikes, what groups are their favorites, etc. Chances are, you'll get a high attendance at the teas, because they'll want to know who you are. Do you have staff under you, or are you a department of one? |

Hi I saw the post about the find it bottles. Instead of buying them I made my own. I actually had my kids to help. I used gator aide bottles. I found little things around the house and asked for help from resident families and community. I told them to clean their junk drawer and bring it too me!! Some of the things I put in them were marbles, pennies, buttons, paperclips, rubber bands, etc. I made a list when I put the things in. Oh yeah I mixed it with rice I found a 20# bag for $2.00. I then typed up the list and put contact paper on it hot glued the lid on hung the list on with a ribbon. Yes it was a little time consuming but alot cheaper than buying them. I put one on each table in the dining room. And some more thru out the home. The residents love them. I rotate the bottles once or so a week. Hope this helps any questions let me know!! |

That's a good idea! I could only afford to buy one, but it would be nice to make them myself and put one on each table in the dining room for something to do while waiting for meals to be served. Our residents are alz/dementia patients, so I would have to glue the cap on with crazy glue for safety reasons. Thanks for the idea! |
