Shooting for the Moon with Activities
printer friendly

Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969. Celebrate this historic July event with some "out of this world" programming.

Start with a clever title. Use your title to advertise your activities - on your bulletin board, in your monthly newsletter and on your monthly calendar. For example:

  • "Shooting for the Moon with July Activities"
  • "Over the Moon in July"
  • "Out of This World Activities"
  • "Great Activities - More than Once in a Blue Moon"
  • "To the Moon with Activities"
  • "Blasting Off with Activities"
  • "Loony Activities"
  • "A Fireworks and Full Moon Month" (combining "moon" theme with Independence Day or Canada Day)

Design a special sign.

Click HERE for two different signs we have designed to help you advertise all of your theme-related activities this month. Simply type in your information and print.

Design a mascot for your monthly theme.

An astraunaut would be perfect. You might have "Al or Alice the Astronaut." Download the image on this page. It is perfect! (See our Clip Art page if you are not sure how to save the images.)

Use your mascot to create interest in this month's programs and to advertise your daily activities. ("Al the Astronaut invites you to attend ...") Frame a picture of your mascot and place it on a table in a high-traffic area.

To build your month around your theme:

  1. Begin by visiting our Decorate & Accentuate page. Here you will find a special theme border for your bulletin board this month.
  2. Next, use the special theme calendar on the Creating Calendars page to make your calendars this month.
  3. Finally, visit all the pages below for theme-related activities.
  • Bingo Cards & Twists - Play a game of LUNAR Bingo this month.
  • It's Puzzling - Print copies of the "Moonwalk" word search, "Searching the Moon" word search and the "Out of This World!" crossword puzzles to solve this month.
  • Let's Talk - Discuss "Full Moon Facts and Folklore."
  • Morsels & More - Learn about the history of MoonPies and try a simple MoonPie recipe.
  • Music Matters - It is Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata and other "Moon Songs" this month.
  • Parties & Socials - Plan a "Once in a Blue Moon Party."
  • Who Am I? - Our mystery person is John Glenn this month.

NOTE: If you decide not to use our "moon" theme, there are many other ideas to work with this month. For example, if you want to go with a traditional July holiday theme, check out our Fourth of July or Canada Day page for a complete list of patriotic activity ideas.

HOPE YOUR ACTIVITIES ARE OVER THE MOON THIS MONTH!
