Once in a Blue Moon Party
printer friendly

Neil Armstrong took the first steps on the moon on July 20, 1969. Celebrate our Theme of the Month with a "moon" party. Below are some ideas and tips for planning a successful event.

Think of a clever title for your party. Besides "Once in a Blue Moon Party," consider:

  • "Man on the Moon Party"
  • "Moon Day Party"
  • "Lunar Landing Party"
  • "A Loony Affair"
  • "Moonlight Madness"
  • "A Full Moon Affair"
  • "Over the Moon Party"
  • "A Spacey Social"

Advertise Your Event

Advertise your party with a special sign. Here are TWO SIGNS that we have designed. Simply type in the name of your event and the specifics. You might say something like:

  • "This party will be out of this world!"
  • "A party like this comes along once in a blue moon."
  • "You will have a howling good time!"
  • "Let's blast off for a party!"

Attire

As host or hostess of the party, dress up like an astronaut. Ask the guests to dress "out of this world."

Room Decorations

  • Use a black, gray and white color theme.
  • Add blue moons all around the room. Click HERE for ones you can print.
  • Post pictures of the Apollo 11 astronauts and the first moon walk. HERE are a few possibilities.
  • Black fabric hung from the walls and over windows can add to your "outer space" look.
  • Scatter star confetti on tables.
  • Make footprints on the floor with a large boot and some flour.
  • Balloons filled with helium will remind guests that there is less gravity on the moon.

Centerpieces

  1. Make "Moon Centerpieces." Take a large styrofoam ball and draw on some lines and "craters" using a black marker. Stand the ball on the top of a bud vase or egg cup and add a small American flag.
  2. For another centerpiece, see our Decorate & Accentuate page and make "Rocket Centerpieces."

Food/Menu

  • Since the "moon is made of green cheese," serve any dish made with cheese.
  • Serve "Moon Rocks" (Swiss cheese cubes) and "Crater Crackers" (any cracker with dimples).
  • How about "Crescent Moon Rolls" (mini hot dogs wrapped in crescent rolls) or "Half Moon Sandwiches" (stuffed pita pockets)?
  • Serve "Moon Salad" made with "crater carrots" and "lunar lettuce."
  • Moons Over My Hammy® is a trademarked sandwich made by the Denny’s Restaurant chain. (Ham and scrambled egg sandwich with Swiss and American cheese on grilled sourdough.) Contact your local Denny’s and see if they will cater!
  • For drinks, serve Tang, "Blue Moons" (blue Kool-Aid) or "Rocket Fuel" (cola).
  • Make a Crater Cake or ...
  • Serve MoonPies for dessert. See our Morsels & More page for some interesting information about MoonPies to share.
  • For the real deal, purchase actual Space Food from NASA - such as Freeze-Dried Astronaut Ice Cream.

For Music

See our Music Matters page for Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata and other "moon" music - such as Blue Moon, Moon River, By the Light of the Silvery Moon, Paper Moon, Moon Over Miami, Fly Me to the Moon and others.

For Fun and Games

  1. Full Moon Icebreaker. Cut circles out of gray paper to make "moons." Then cut each "moon" into two pieces. Use unusual shapes so that each pair is a little different. Give each guest one piece as he/she enters the party. Ask your guests to find the other half of their moons to make "full moons."
  2. Full Moon Match. Print copies of the Matching Full Moons for all of your guests to solve.
  3. Moon Puzzles. See our It's Puzzling page and print copies of the Moonwalk and Searching the Moon word searches and the Out of This World! crossword puzzle.
  4. Moonwalking. Michael Jackson made the “moonwalk” a popular dance in the 80s. Contact a local dance school and see if they have anyone who could demonstrate or teach the move to your guests.
  5. One Big Step. The first footprint on the moon was 13 by 6 inches, the dimensions of Neil Armstrong's boot. Measure everyone's footprint and give a prize for the largest.

Party Talk

Ask your guests to share where they were when Neil Armstrong first stepped on the moon. Did they watch it on TV? What did they think? For more discussion, see our Let's Talk page for a discussion about "Full Moon Facts & Folklore."

Party Favors and Prizes

Give all of your guests a MoonPie, Rock Candy sticks, Pop-Rocks candy, Milky Way bar or Mars bar. If you want, make your own Moon Rock Candy.
